Let's Discuss: Is Talk Radio Dead?

Alright, alright. Jacque Jo here. I've got something that's been troubling me lately and I wanted to open it up for discussion.

As I was getting ready for work the other morning, I heard a commercial on a local station say, "Talk radio is DEAD."

Dead?

Really?

It's dead?

Did I miss something? Because I seem to hear more and more of it.

Ever the researcher, I decided to ask my friend Google if this was true.

I found this article -- My untimely demise -- by nationally syndicated talk show host Glenn Beck. Glenn is the host of The Glenn Beck Program which airs from 9 a.m. to noon in the east Monday through Friday. He's also on television nightly on CNN Headline News. He's an accomplished author, too.

Yeah, I'm a fan. I love the guy. I've even been to see him live and it was an experience I won't soon forget.

I think he's got some great points in this article, but then again, he could wax poetic about the ingredients in Cap'n Crunch and I'm going to love it.

Here's the deal ... talk radio is so far from dead. We do it here. Right here. Every single day. We have original shows, original voices and a whole lot of personality. We've got the ability at our fingertips to reach millions of listeners a day with commentary and programming people won't find anywhere else.

We have the ability -- right here -- to make the entire world think. And we do. Every day.

We are the future here, and I truly believe that. The Internet broadcasters like us are the next generation of this medium and with what we're doing at TalkRadioX, we're right on the front lines.

So, let's have some discussion, guys. Check out his article and tell me what you think.

Toby,

The government is implanting mind control chips in the brain of every new born baby!

What's worse is they are also secretly engineering a race of super humans, built for war, that will one day rebel and destroy their military creators and wage war on the general population!!!!

Everybody hates us and we are all going to die a very bloody and painful death!!!!

Quick! To the streets...we must warn the people of these coming times!!!!!

P.S. I can't believe it has taken me this long to see the truth. I'm so glad I finally woke up and stopped drinking the koolaid!

"We have troops dying every day in an illegal war going on RIGHT NOW."

Yes we do. But it's not a war, it's a mission of peace to bring such to a world that has never known it and if we did not, no one else would and one day only the cock roaches will be wandering around the earth. We are there for the future of an entire world, not just a nation.

"There are thousands of women and children being butchered in Darfur."

Natural selection. Survival of the fittest. Nature eliminates what can't survive on it's own. Man, woman or child.

"Our government was involved in 911 and the REFUSE to open an independent investigation."

I've already debunked your theory months ago. Drop it.

"Thousands of people are being evicted to poisonous trailers."

What the fuck is this all about? You need to back away from the campfire.

"Our government is in control by malicious fucking liars."

Our government has no control, so that statement can't even begin to be close.

"Its too bad the that the women and children that are being hacked to death in Darfur is not in your backyard. Maybe then you would care."

See above ::points up::

"Anthrax was mailed to the two senators that would have been able to stop the Patriot Act."

Have you checked your own hands for evidence of anthrax? Only a nut job was responsible for that. Shoe fits? Where it.

"The Anthrax was sent from a US lab."

How did YOU get clearance?

"This is one of a thousand things going wrong and playing ignorant is not enough anymore."

It's not ignorance. It's having a mind that is able to deduce real facts from ones that comes from minds such as Jerry Fletcher (Conspiracy Theory).

"The first responders had a moneybomb on the 16th and the only had 223 donors. They met less than 1% of their goal."

Do you have ADD or something? Good Christ. I don't know how you get to point B form A without taking some sort of short bus. Tickets please!

"Home of the Free and the Brave?"

You fuckin know it and I am proud of it. Try and get away with saying the shit we do in the Middle East.

I wanted to get back to the original point of Jacque Jo's post, which first off, thanks for creating this bad ass blog and posting the Glenn Beck article. I hadn't seen that and was glad to hear what Glenn had to say. For what it's worth, I believe that a certain TYPE of talk radio is, maybe not dead or dying, but at the very least incredibly old and eating lots of tapioca pudding and pissing into a bag. It's just not possible for anyone to believe that they are absolutely right about anything for too long without a LOT of people saying "hey, we should actually find out whether this person is a complete and total whack job douche bag lying twerp", which is what has happened to Limbaugh, Hannity, and O'Reilly at various times in the past few years. Those that "drink the kool-aid" as Toby puts it will always do so, but it's also more than a bit presumptuous to believe that just because a talk show host, such as myself, prefers dick jokes and talking about tv theme songs to ramming my political views down my listener's throats, that we need to wake up. The absolute beauty of this country, and the beauty of the new generation of talk radio the way I see it, is that we are now wise enough to not try to spoon feed people horseshit political positions, but to make the leap of faith that people that listen to our shows are smart enough to think for themselves and we respect their opinions, so let's be fucking entertaining instead of inundating them with a verbal barrage of conspiracy theories that make us seem like Oliver Stone with tourette's syndrome. Woop, fuck, woop, Condi Rice is actually a Chinese man in drag, woop, shit, piss, cunt. My point is simply, it is possible to be a talk radio host that believes his listeners are just as smart if not smarter than the douche bag hosting the show, so why not let them make their own life decisions (unless they are crazy enough to write or call in and ask for your advice) and just be fucking entertaining. I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for the people bored enough to actually listen to my show, so I feel that my duty is not to preach to them (unless they've asked for a sermon), but to help them through their day as they make the hard ass decisions that affect their own lives. Of course that's just what I think, but what the hell do I know, I'm not even a real damn doctor. :)
Cheers,
Doc

Well put Doc,

And to add to the original content of the blog I feel that talk radio has never been dead, just going through it's low points. Radio has always had it's peaks and valleys. It's too bad that a few generations don't remember the days when radio was the ruler of your entertainment. This is why we have MPIR radio right here on the TRX station. But, with the advent of TV and video games and computers and then the switch to bigger TVs, HD video games and faster computers, radio just became a niche entertainment.

Now there is a resurgence. No long confines to the car ride to and from work, radio and Internet radio and specifically talk radio is surging. Sure, it will come with some painful growth spurts as Internet radio has allowed for a more common man to "broadcast" a show but like evolution, the pretenders, the non entertaining and those that do not welcome change (my show is in constant flux to meet the needs) will slowly be eliminated.

It's just a natural selection.

::smirks::

So no, far from dead. Foot's no longer in the grave. Cancer is in remission. It's just got to grow some of that hair back and get out there!

By the way. I totally agree with Doc here. Most of my listeners are a hell of a lot smarter than I am and I understand this. So it forces me to search for facts and try and present my side of the story the best way I can and in the most entertaining way. I'm by no means in the same league as Dr. Rock, BDub, Darryl and some of the others here as far as being a broadcaster, but I have been doing this since 2002 so I gotta guess I am doing something right. And I'm not a real doctor either but I once played one...with my neighbors daughter in her back yard. True story. I miss you Doris.

I wonder if actually in truth it's the listeners that are dead?

Of course not!! But the truth is that talk radio pundits of the likes of Rush, Garafolo and Stern have sway still upon the hearts of there respective listners. Here on Talkradiox, as a listener, I have found an alternative to the filtered nonsense in FM and AM. With Regards,

Your friend,
mrgnuopensourceman

PS, BDub, I happen to be one of those babies you are talking about, and I feel perfectly fine!!!!!!
